A western-themed birthday party for your child is fun and easy to do. Most kids and adults get a kick out of dressing up western style and having a birthday party with horses and cowboy hats. This themes works for both boys and girls.

The Wild West offers a wealth of decorating and activity ideas for a great birthday party. It does not have to be expensive, either. There are a lot of sites that offer different packages for different budgets, and there are also things you can make yourself and buy in your local discount store.

Invitations are always a fun part of the party. Anticipation is half the fun! You can let your child pick out some western-themed invitations, or you can make them yourself. One way is to make them on your computer with western motifs and all of the information on the inside.

If you tend to be the crafty type, go to your local scrapbook store and pick out some cardstock for the card, and some western die cuts and paper that has a bandanna print or other western theme. Cut the cardstock to invitation size. Cut a piece of the western themed paper into a square that is smaller than the front of the card, and attach it to the front. Then, you can use your computer to write something campy or cute regarding the Wild West theme.

Print and place it on the front of the card, making sure the decorative paper shows around the edges. Place a western die cut on one of the corners, and fill the inside with the party information and another western die cut, brad, sticker or other scrapbook item.

A spiritual retreat is a time to examine, to discover, and to decide–a time to look back with reverence and gratitude, and perhaps even with some sorrow and regret–a time to find peace in the present and hope for the future–a time to decide which path of life we will follow, our own, or that of Jesus and the gospel. As with any religious experience, a retreat is a journey of discovery to the inner self and then back again to the circumstances of our every- day life, but with new, fresh perspectives. While retreat events follow a time schedule, participants are encouraged to pace the retreat to their personal needs for prayer, rest, and relaxation..

A spiritual retreat or church retreat is an excellent way for your church to foster community and support with the people closest to you spiritually. Selecting the proper location to host a retreat is an important factor in a retreat’s overall mission success.

Old Western Party and Event Planning Suggestions:

We have tons of western, country style party ideas that will help you design invitations, pick out decorations and offer party favors that will make your party a foot stompin’, Hee-Hawin” success.

We’ll make sure your program is cost-effective and perfectly matched with your group’s specific needs. “We strive to be the best in the west!”

Some ideas you might want to consider for your western party at the Gold Bar Ranch:

Western Invitations

Create a WANTED poster as the invitation to your party! Roll it up with all of the party details on the inside, and tie it with a bandanna. Use parchment colored paper and black lettering.

Use your imagination to set the stage for your adventurous western party. Hand deliver a colorful cowboy hat to your guests with all of the exciting party details folded up inside of the hat. Make sure to request that your guests come to the party wearing the invitation (the hat, not the paper).

You may want to send a Wild West invitation or an Out West invitation to your hoedown inserted in a child’s cowboy hat.

Really make a ringing impression with customized cowbells. Buy cowbells, paint the name of each guest on the outside and attach the party details to the ringer inside. Send or hand-deliver. Cowbells can be found at your local novelty store or discount mass merchandiser.

This is a great theme party for a birthday party. Start making your Western birthday party unforgettable by letting Party411 custom design a caricature for you! Whether you’re dressed in cowboy garb riding a horse, or doing a do-si-do, this caricature will make you look like you are straight out of an old western.

Ask your guests to come dressed for the occasion. Of course as the host, you’ll be dressed in denim (skirt or pants), fringe, cowboy boots with spurs, a bandanna, a sequin cowboy hat, holster or cutesy vest/skirt combo a la Dale Evans. Having some blinking western beads available for every guest is a fun way to welcome your fellow cowhands and it lights up the party. If cowboy is not your thing, but Native American is, find traditional headdress, moccasins and clothing to fit the bill.

Western Party Decorations

Whoa, pardner, this is such a great theme for decorations since there are lots of things you can do to make your party authentic. First, set the stage for your event with real hay bales outside the entrance. Use real or plastic cactus around the hay as well to really give your presentations some depth. Plastic snakes should be all around the ground, but fear not, your cowboys and cowgirls will surely be able to handle them. If you have one or can borrow or rent one, place a western-style saddle on top of one of the bales. Naturally, this setting wouldn’t be complete without a longhorn steer somewhere nearby. Or better yet put up a Split Rail Fence with a Plastic Longhorn Skull and Wagon Wheel strategically placed to make your prairie scene realistic.

Now if the Party Girl were to go all out, she might rent a Covered Wagon, haul it to the front yard or venue entrance and hang a big sign on the outside that says something like “Jack & Jill’s O.K. Corral” or “Welcome to American Corporation’s Old West.” If you can do without the wagon, go for the sign anyway, it will give your event charm and recognition. Party411’s Creations For You can create a dazzling display for whatever you want to say.

Inside, greet your guests with their own tomahawks or sheriff badges.

Have a Country Western Music CD playing. You might also play other classic country artists like Patsy Cline, Johnny Cash, Loretta Lynn, George Jones, June Carter Cash, Willie Nelson, Waylon Jennings and Decorate for the rodeo or square dance and bring back the feeling of the Old West with our Western Party Kit, including tissue balls, garlands, fans and cutouts. Your guests will get a laugh out of the arrow through your head trick. Don’t worry, though, this gimmick will cause you no pain.

Hang “wanted” posters all over the walls with the host/hostesses pictures as well as a jointed American Indian, cowboy, and other western cutouts. Hang “Cowboys” and “Cowgirls” signs on your bathroom doors. Use rope to make lassos and hang as garland.

Tables & Centerpieces
Use checkered toppers over red linens for great looking tables, and use solid red and solid white napkins (every other placesetting) for a little more pizzazz. Denim table covers are another way to go, too. You can even use metal sheriff’s badges as napkin rings (pin one in the middle of each napkin). If paper products are the way to go, You can use country check plates, napkins and table covers combined with apple red cutlery is a necessity, too.

If you want some great paper goods for your country western theme party check out these fun options.

Red Bandanna Plates

Old West Plates

Wild West Plates

Believe it or not, there are fabulous Molded Mini Western Candles. 2 ½” votive candles are perfect for your table. you can use as votives to add some fun to the table decorations.

A cactus makes a wonderful centerpiece for a western party! Tie red and blue bandannas around your clay pots to brighten up those cactus plants. Stick mini-spurs in the plant soil for an added WOW. You can find these in a toy store or toy department of your local stores. Don’t forget to sprinkle Cactus Confetti around. It adds a great touch!

Another fun idea is to re-create a “western setting” in the middle of the table. For a really creative centerpiece, use an old-style metal coffeepot, a bandanna-lined basket (that you can fill with just about anything), some old-style metal coffee cups, and several bottles of fancy barbecue sauce. Just arrange these all together in the center of the table.

For Kids’ tables, try a cowboy play set as the centerpiece. Not only will it look inviting to them, but also they can entertain themselves as they sit and eat.

Some other great options for a western centerpiece include:

Straw Bale Centerpiece

Western Boot Centerpiece

3D Cactus Centerpiece. Bring the desert home!

Seating Cards
Roll up and ribbon-tie one bandanna for each person as a seating card. Tie off the seating card with their name and table number and you have a party favor, too. Another idea for seating cards is plastic horseshoes, found in your local toy store. Print the name and table number of your guests on each one. We’ve also got a Western seating card that you can fill in your guests name, or have us do it for you!

Western Menu
The most popular type of food for a western theme party is barbecued anything. Whether you feast on roasted pig, chicken, hot dogs, hamburgers, or steak, make sure that you cover the food in rich and tasty barbecue sauces. Other great foods to add to the menu at this party are chili, stew, and baked beans. Don’t forget a variety of salsas, chips and other dips. For unique ways to serve food try these ideas:

Place a small bowl in the top of a cowboy boot and fill it with salsa. Use boots of different sizes to give your salsa bar depth and variety

Use a real cowboy hat, turned upside down and line with a check napkin to hold chips. You can place bowls inside the hats, too, if you are hesitant about napkins.

Tie bandannas around other bowls and lay them flat underneath serving platters to carry your theme throughout.

Vinyl horses make great cardholders for your food names on the buffet table.

Western Party Activities
Hire a professional “caller” to entertain you with authentic square dancing. While you’re at it, you might as well hire a professional dance instructor to teach you how to do-si-do.

Play “musical hats” to keep everyone entertained. Make sure to buy authentic cowboy hats and American Indian headdresses though, or the game won’t be nearly as much fun. Gather everyone together and try to bust the Western Pinatas. A sure fire party hit!

Fill the piñata with candy and fun toys that go with the western theme.

ATV and OHV Trails - Places to Ride

It seems to be getting harder and harder to find good spot in Arizona that is a great place to ride ATVs, quads, dirt bikes and OHVs. Area users, who prefer to ride ATVs or dirt bikes, find this area a very technically challenging area that is not congested like many off-road trails and parks in Arizona.

The Gold Bar Ranch, “where the west stays wild,” is that vast region of Arizona west of the Hassayampa River. Much of this remote and largely unsettled area is traversed by more than 5,000 miles of dirt roads. Road conditions range from well-maintained graded roads, to high clearance two-tracks, to challenging routes that require 4-wheel drive vehicles. No services are available in this largely back country area, so be prepared.

Motorized vehicles are generally limited to existing routes, with wilderness areas closed and National Monuments limited to designated routes. Watch for signs in these areas. High Desert to Ponderosa Pine Forest. Generally all seasons, however, avoid use in wet weather.

Lying at the base of Vulture Peak (the most visible landmark in the Wickenburg area), The Vulture Gold Mine was first staked by Henry Wickenburg in 1863, fueling the small gold rush that helped populate this section of the Arizona desert.

Today, the Vulture Mine has the feel of a ghost town, and though you can’t go down into the old mine itself, you can wander around the aboveground shacks and mine structures on a self-guided tour. Mildly interesting for those who appreciate old mines, and fun for kids.

Henry sold the mine after a few years. The Vulture, however, went on to become the most productive gold mine in the history of Arizona. Vulture City grew to a population of almost five thousand people. The mine sparked the development of Arizona and the city of Phoenix.

The Vulture Mine is said to have produced gold worth more than $200 million dollars, but the exact amount is unknown. Some say that nearly half of the Vulture’s gold was stolen. “Highgrading” or theft of the high grade ore was common at the Vulture. At least 18 men were hung on the Vulture City’s hanging tree, nearly all for highgrading.

When President Franklin Roosevelt closed the mine in 1942 (WW II) many miners left believing that they would return in six months, but the mine never reopened. Almost overnight a once thriving community became a ghost town.

When most people think of prospectors, they think of panning for gold. Panning for gold involves gold placers, defined as gold contained in gravel and sand. This form of gold was originally embedded in rock. Natural erosion processes wore down the rock into gravel and sand. With gold placers, separating the gold is a relatively easy processing of washing the gravel and sand from the heavier gold.

With mining, the gold is still embedded in the rock. First, the miner must dig the rock out of the ground. Then he must pulverize the rock. Only after this can the miner use panning methods to separate the gold from the rest of the rock.

Guests staying at the Gold Bar Ranch can take a tour of the Vulture Gold Mine by taking a short drive to Wickenburg.

There are also other gold mines near the Gold Bar Ranch that can reached by horses or an ATV ride.

Let the Gold Bar Ranch know if you would like to see an old gold mine and they will set it up.

Successful Arizona Gold Panning Procedures

Follow these steps to successfully pan for gold at the Gold Bar Ranch in Arizona:

1. Successfully Locating Gold Pockets - Knowing Where to Look

Since gold is much heavier than water (about 19 times heavier), the gold stays on the bottom and gets caught in the sand in slow moving areas around bends of the stream and along the shore. Look in the following places to find gold along the Hassayampa River:

  • • Small crevices in rocks
  • • Gravel filled sections of drift wood
  • • Gravel bars in the middle of the river
  • • Gravel bars around heavy water runoff
  • • The downstream side of large boulders or tree roots in streams
  • • Cracks above the water-line, along the edge of the stream
  • • In streaks of gravel that settle above streambeds
  • • The bottom of active flowing stream channels
2. Successfully Panning for Gold - Knowing How to Pan for Gold

Panning gold is basically simple, once you realize that you are doing the same thing that the river does when it causes gold to concentrate and deposit during flood storms.

The process basically consists of placing the material that you want to process into your pan and shaking it in a left to right motion underwater to cause the gold, which is heavy, to work its way down toward the bottom of your pan. At the same time, the lighter materials, which are worthless, are worked up to the surface of the gold pan where they can be swept away. The process of shaking and sweeping is repeated until only the heaviest of materials are left-namely the gold and heaviest sand.

You will notice that no two people pan gold exactly alike. After you have been at it awhile, you will develop your own little twists and shakes to accomplish the proper result.

Here follows a basic gold panning procedure to start off with which works well and is easy to learn:

Gold Panning Step 1:

Once you have located some gravel that you want to sample, place it in your gold pan-filling it about 3/4 of the way to the top. After you have been at it awhile, you can fill your pan to the top without losing any gold. While placing material in your pan, pick out the larger-sized rocks, so that you can get more of the smaller material and gold into the pan.

Panning for Gold Step #1

Gold Panning Step 2:

Choose a spot to do your panning. It is best to pick a location where the water is at least six inches deep and preferably flowing just enough to sweep away any silty water that may be washed from your pan. This way, you can see what you are doing better. You do not want the water moving so swiftly that it will upset your panning actions. A mild current will do, if available.

It is always best to find a spot where there’s a rock or log or stream-bank or something that you can sit down upon while panning. You can pan effectively while squatting, kneeling or bending over, but it does get tiresome. If you are planning to process more than just one or two pans, sitting down will make the activity much more pleasant.

Gold Panning Step 3:

Carry the pan over to your determined spot and submerge it underwater.

Panning for Gold Step #1

Gold Panning Step 4:

Use your fingers to knead the contents of the pan to break it up fully and cause all of the material to become saturated with water. This is the time to work apart all the clay, dirt, roots, moss and such with your fingers to ensure that all the materials are fully broken up and in a liquid state of suspension whithin the pan.

The pan should be underwater while doing this. Mud and silt will float up and out. Do not concern yourself about losing any gold when this happens. Remember: gold is heavy and will sink deeper in your pan while these lighter materials are floating out and away.

Panning for Gold Step #1

Gold Panning Step 5:

After the entire contents of the pan have been thoroughly broken up, take the pan in your hands (with cheater riffles on the far side of the pan) and shake it, using a vigorous left and right motion just under the surface of the water. This action will help to break up the contents of the pan even more and will also start to work the heavier materials downwards in the pan while the lighter materials will start to surface.

Be careful not to get so vigorous in your left and right shaking that you slosh material out of the pan during this step. Depending upon the consistency of the material that you are working, it may be necessary to alternate doing steps four and five over again a few times to get all of the pan’s contents into a liquid state of suspension. It is this same liquid state of suspension that allows the heavier materials to sink in the pan while the lighter materials emerge to the surface.

Panning for Gold Step #4

Gold Panning Step 6:

As the shaking action causes rocks to rise up to the surface, sweep them out of the pan using your fingers or the side of your hand. Just sweep off the top layer of rocks which have worked their way up to the pan’s surface.

Panning for Gold Step #4

Don’t worry about losing gold while doing this, because the same action which has brought the lighter rocks to the surface will have worked the gold deeper down toward the bottom of the pan.

When picking the larger rocks out of the pan, make sure that they are clean of clay and other particles before you toss them out. Clay sometimes contains pieces of gold and also has a tendency to grab onto the gold in your pan.

Note: Working the raw material through a classification screen into the gold pan during Step 1 or Step 3 will eliminate the need to sweep out larger rocks in Step 6. This will also allow you to pan a larger sample of the finer-sized material (which contains all the gold you will find in a pan sample).

Gold Panning Step 7:

Continue to do steps five and six, shaking the pan and sweeping out the rocks and pebbles(if present), until most of the medium-sized material is out of your pan.

Gold Panning Step 8:

Tilt the forward edge of your pan downward slightly to bring the forward-bottom edge of the pan to a lower position. With the pan tilted forward, shake it back and forth using the same left and right motion. Be careful not to tilt the pan forward so much that any material is spilled over the forward-edge while shaking.

Panning for Gold Step #4

This tilted shaking action causes the gold to start working its way down to the pan’s forward-bottom edge, and continues to work the lighter materials to the surface where they will be more easily swept off.

Gold Panning Step 9:

Carefully, by using a forward and backward movement, or a slight circular motion just below the surface of the water, allow the water to sweep the top layer of worthless, lighter materials out of the pan. Only allow the water to sweep out a little at a time, while watching closely for the heavier materials to be uncovered as the lighter materials are swept out. It takes some judgment in this step to determine just how much material to sweep off before having to shake again so that no gold is lost.

It will just take a little practice in panning gold before you will begin to see the difference between the lighter materials and the heavier materials in your pan. You will develop a feel for knowing how much material can be safely swept out before re-shaking is necessary.

When you are first starting, it is best to re-shake as often as you feel that it is needed to prevent losing any gold. When in doubt, shake! There are a few factors which can be pointed out to help you with this. Heavier materials are usually darker in color than the lighter materials. You will notice while shaking the pan that it is the lighter-colored materials that are vibrating on the surface. You will also notice that as the lighter materials are swept out of the pan, the darker-colored materials are uncovered.

Materials tend to get darker (and heavier) as you work your way down toward the bottom of the pan, where the darkest and heaviest materials will be found, they being the purple and black sands, which are usually minerals of the iron family. The exception to this is gold, which is heaviest of all. Gold usually is of a bright and shiny metallic color and shows out well in contrast to the other heavier materials at the bottom of the gold pan.

One other factor to keep in mind is that the lighter materials sweep out of your pan more easily than do the heavier materials. As the heavier materials are uncovered, they are increasingly more resistant to being swept out of the pan, and will give you an indication of when it is time to re-shake.

As you work your way down through your pan, sometimes gold particles will show themselves as you get down to the heavier materials. When you see gold, you know it is time to re-shake your pan.

There is another popular method of sweeping the lighter materials out of the top of your pan which you might prefer to use. It is done by dipping your pan under the water and lifting it up, while allowing the water to run off the forward edge of the pan, taking the top layer of material along with it.

Panning for Gold Step #4

Gold Panning Step 10:

Once the top layer of lighter material is washed out of your pan, re-shake to bring more lighter materials to the top. By “lighter materials,” I mean in comparison to the other materials. If you continue to shake the lighter materials to the top and sweep them off, eventually you will be left with the heaviest material of all, which is the gold. It does not take much shaking to bring a new layer of lighter material to the surface. Maybe 5 or 6 seconds of shaking will do it, maybe less. It all depends upon the consistency of the material and how much gold is present.

Continue to pluck out the larger-sized rocks and pebbles as they show themselves during the process.

Gold Panning Step 11:

Every few cycles of sweeping and re-shaking, tilt your pan back to the level position and re-shake. This keeps any gold from being allowed to work its way up the forward-edge of your pan.

Gold Panning Step 12:

Continue the above steps of sweeping and re-shaking until you are down to the heaviest materials in your pan. These usually consist of old pieces of lead and other metal, coins, BB’s, old bullets, buckshot, nails, garnets, small purple and black iron rocks, and the heavy black sand concentrates. Black sands consist mainly or in part of the following: magnetite (magnetic black sands), hematite (non-magnetic black sands), titanium, zircon, rhodolite, monazite, tungsten materials, and sometimes pyrites (fool’s gold), plus any other items which might be present in that location which have a high specific gravity-like gold and platinum.

Panning for Gold Step #4

Once down to the heaviest black sands in your pan, you can get a quick look at the concentrates to see how much gold is present by allowing about a half-cup of water into the pan, tilting the pan forward as before, and shaking from left to right to place the concentrates in the forward-bottom section of your pan. Then, level the pan off and swirl the water around in slow circles. This action will gradually uncover the concentrates, and you can get a look at any gold that is present. The amount of gold in your pan will give you an idea how rich the raw material is that you are sampling.

Panning for Gold Step #4

A magnet can be used to help remove the magnetic black sands from the gold pan. Take care when doing this. While gold is not magnetic, sometimes particles of gold will become trapped in the magnetic net of iron particles which clump together and attach to the magnet.

I prefer to drop the magnetic sands into a second plastic gold pan, swish them around, and then pick them up once again with the magnet. Depending upon how much gold this leaves behind, I might do this several times before finally discarding the magnetic sands.

Many beginners like to stop panning at this point and pick out all the pieces of gold (colors) with tweezers. This is one way of recovering the gold from your pan, but it is a pretty slow method.

Most prospectors who have been at it for awhile will pan down through the black sands as far as they feel that they can go without losing any gold. Then they check the pan for any colors by swirling it, and pick out any of the larger-sized flakes and nuggets to place them in a gold sample bottle. Then the remaining concentrates are poured into a small coffee can or bucket and allowed to accumulate there until the end of the day, or week, or whenever enough concentrates have been collected to make it worthwhile further process them.

This is really the better method if you are interested in recovering more gold, because it allows you to get on with the job of panning and sampling without getting deeply involved with a pair of tweezers. Otherwise, you can end up spending 25% of your time panning and up to 75% of your time picking out small colors from the pan!

Historic Ghost Town Tours

Vulture City, Arizona. Ghost Town Near Wickenburg.

Exuding that unmistakable atmosphere of a western ghost town, Maricopa County’s Vulture City was once one of the richest gold mines in the west. Discovered in 1863 by Henry Wickenburg, Vulture Mine, which is near Wickenburg, Arizona was one of the Arizona Territory’s richest mines and it was still producing, at decreased levels, until World War II. Today, this ghost town provides visitors with the opportunity to see a genuine vision of what life was like in an old west mining town. Many buildings remain in tact and there is also a fair amount of mining equipment to see. Unlike many ghost towns today, Vulture City has not been remade into a “rebuilt tourist” destination-it still retains its authenticity and many visitors come to enjoy it throughout the year.

Vulture Mine’s Early Days.
Despite early management problems, Vulture Mine’s wealth allowed the camp to blossom into a self-contained town by 1880. Along with roughly six boarding houses, the town boasted a cookhouse and mess hall, a blacksmith shop, several buildings associated with the mine, stores, offices, saloons, and even a school. By this time there were about three hundred miners and their families living in town. Vulture City peaked with a population of about 5,000 residents. Owner after owner would face many challenges turning a profit with the mine over the next several decades as the main gold vein was lost. However, the mine was not officially shut down until 1942. Throughout its lifespan, the mines at Vulture City officially produced upwards of two hundred million dollars in gold.

Vulture City Today.
Although privately owned, this old ghost town is open to the public for a small fee. Because it rates so highly among ghost town enthusiasts, Vulture City is a big Arizona attraction. There are a variety of town highlights that should not be missed on a visit. Henry Wickenburg’s cabin still remains as is the nearby ironwood hanging tree where 18 men were hung on charges of high grading (stealing ore).

There are many buildings in their original form around the site. Many are unstable as they have not been restored. The camp’s largest structure is a two-story building that once housed the mine’s office. This building also contained the assay office as well as an underground vault that once stored bars of gold. The blacksmith’s shop can also be seen as well as many other historic structures. Many of the office workers’ and mine worker’s possessions can be seen in the dwellings where they once lived. Visitors will come across many period relics including tables, chairs, clothes, and other antique objects that nearly bring the rooms back to life.

Getting To Vulture City.
From Phoenix. Take US 60 (Grand Avenue) northwest to Wickenburg, Arizona which is about 50 miles from downtown Phoenix. Upon reaching Wickenburg continue west on US 60 for about 2.5 miles to Vulture Mine Road. Turn south and travel about 12 miles to Vulture City. Vulture City is open to visitors from September through June. Nominal fees are charged to tour the town.

About the Gold Bar Ranch:

The farming and ranching success of the Gold Bar Ranch and surrounding ranches were made famous by early discoveries of Gold in the Bradshaw Mountains. As early mining claims flourished several towns sprung up in the area to serve, which at one time had more than 1,000 miners. The early towns of Walnut Grove, Peeples Valley, Wickenburg and Crown King have seen their populations rise and fall over the years, but the communities are still thriving due to the lush and fertile valley of the Hassayampa River.

For thousands of years before the first settlers arrived, the native indians cultivated plentiful crops and hunted large groups of javelina and mule deer in the area.

The Gold Bar Ranch is still blessed with the beauty and moisture provided by the Hassayampa River, which flows through the ranch property and is one of Arizona’s premiere remaining riparian habitats. Because of the crystal-clear waters that flow year round, the Gold Bar Ranch provides a natural home to an amazing collection of wildlife and flocks of birds that live in the fertile valley.

The marshy riverbanks offer breathtaking views of the river’s course against the backdrop of the foothills, making the perfect spot for a picnic or bird watching afternoon.

If you want to get rich, you can pan for gold in the river using an old fashioned gold pan. Or you can get really serious and shovel loads and loads of riverbed sand and gravel into the Gold Bar Ranch’s gold sifter. You can rent the machine by the hour and only pay a small commission on all the gold the machine uncovers.

The Gold Bar Ranch is also home to some of the best outdoor off-road recreation in the state of Arizona. Whether your preferred method of exploring the outback is a horseback ride, a four wheeled drive jeep tour, ATV’s or a mountain bike, the Gold Bar Ranch provides miles and miles of trails and dirt roads to discover. In fact, the Gold Bar Ranch offers guided ATV tours and open range horseback rides to several nearby indian ruins, ghost towns and old gold mines.

The truly western aficionados will appreciate the Gold Bar Ranch because it still an active cattle ranch. You can take lessons on how to rope a cow and practice on the static roping targets. Once you have perfected your skills, you can even try your aim on some real cattle.

Whether young or old, adventuresome or simply interested in the storied past of one of Arizona’s great western towns, the Gold Bar Ranch is the perfect place to beat the heat of the Arizona desert. The year round temperatures are considerably milder than the warmer Phoenix area and the town’s backdrop against the foothills makes for pleasant winters as well. The Gold Bar Ranch is the perfect place to camp and get away from hectic pace of meetings, phone calls and emails.

The Gold Bar Ranch’s biggest asset is its hardworking cowboys and cowgirls. They are invaluable in providing safe, interesting rides to some of Arizona’s most important historical sites and landmarks in the area. They are very friendly and always enjoying sharing the details of what it is like to work on a real cattle ranch. They are a little shy, so don’t be afraid to ask them questions about what it is like to live and work on a working ranch.

You can even rent and sleep in the old ranchhand bunkhouse, which has been converted into a very comfortable bed and breakfast facility.

Life on a Working Cattle Ranch

The Gold Bar Ranch is a 300-acre working cattle ranch, located in northwestern Arizona at an altitude of 3,800 to 4,000 feet. The the Gold Bar Ranch headquarters sits beside the lush Hassayampa River in the foothills of the Bradshaw Mountains.

The Gold Bar Ranch is owned by Mike and Ella McCracken and has been in the McCracken Family for more that three generations. Barzona and Charlet cows and their calves graze on this ranch and when enough grass permits, we also pasture yearling steers. This spring has been the greenest spring that we have seen in about 10 years, and we are currently growing our herd.

During the summer months the Gold Bar Ranch allows up four guests to tags along that want to experience the day-to-day activities of a real cowboy’s life on a cattle ranch. Sometimes we drive cattle from one pasture to an ungrazed pasture. Other time we round up the yearling bulls, vaccinate them and castrate them to prevent in-breeding and brand them the Gold Bar Ranch symbol in the corral.

We ride in the mornings to check the cattle. This usually takes anywhere from 3 - 5 hours riding. We check on new-born calves and their mammas, check the waters etc. When it’s time to move the cattle, you help gather and drive the cattle to a new pasture. Our grazing management puts emphasis on giving the plants long rest periods before being briefly grazed again. Therefore, we move cattle frequently.

In the spring when most of the calves are born, we begin branding, tagging and castrating calves. Often we help neighboring ranchers gather and brand their calves. During the mid-summer months we continue to check on the cattle and move them to new pastures. We may have some late calves that still need branding. In the fall, September and October, we gather and ship cattle and also spend a lot of time helping neighboring ranchers do the same. These are busy times, with oftentimes long hours in the saddle.

In the afternoons we tend to have a dozen ranch chores to do - anything from fixing or building fences, brush control, to putting out salt and mineral for the cattle and wildlife, or anything else that may come along. You are more than welcome to join us and lend a helping hand.

Guided Deer & Elk Hunting Trips

The Gold Bar Ranch is located in an area that is full of wild game, including deer, javelina, quail, dove, and ducks. We also have a ton of predators, such as coyotes, bobcats, and mountain lions.

As a boy, growing up in the mountains provided Mr. McCracken with a lot of time to hunt and to hone his superb hunting skills. By the time he turned 20, Mr. McCracken had turned his love for hunting into a successful outdoor guiding service. He loves to help new hunters learn the tricks of the trade, povides them with valuable insight on how to track animals, recognize their tracks and point out good hunting areas based on food, water and fresh animal signs. Mike loves to help hunters successfully fill their tag.

His specialty is guiding hunting trips for mountain lions and bears in the Bradshaw mountains, but has been guiding hunting trips for turkey, deer, elk, javelina, dove, quail, and ducks for the past thirty 30.

His home resembles wildlife museum. He has lots of trophy deer and elk hanging on his wall, as well as numerous stuffed mountain lions and bear skin rugs.

If you have drawn a tag for any species in Hunt Unit 20a, 20b or 20c, this is Mr. McCracken’s backyard, but his guiding business has given him more than 30 years of hunting experience. He has guided hunting parties from Hunt Unit 27 on the east side of Arizona all the way up the Mogollon Rim to Mormon Lake in Hunt Unit 6a to the Kaibab plateau on the North Rim of the Grand Canyon in Hunt Unit 12.

He comes highly recommended and has lots of hunter testimonials that will attest to his expert hunting skills and success rates.

If you would like to plan a guided hunting trip, please contact Mike McCracken at (928) 427-3231 or e-mail at Ranch@Goldbarranchbb.com. Please detail the species you were drawn for and the hunt number or hunting dates of your trip. Mike provides quality, guided hunts at a price that is affordable to most hunters.

Tent and RV Campsites

Ponds Stocked with Trophy Bass

The best way to beat the Arizona summertime heat is to make your way to the Bradshaw Mountains. Our summertime temperatures are usually 15 - 20 degrees cooler than it is in Phoenix because our ranch is located up in the mountains.

The fishing is great. We have two private ponds, which are stocked with Largemouth Bass, Catfish and Bluegill. No fishing license required. You can either bring your own fishing gear or use some of our rental equipment. There are always plenty of fish to catch since our ponds are catch and release only.

Old-Fashioned Swimming Hole

Our ponds also serve as a good old fashioned swimming hole, complete with a rope swing. The water is refreshing and is a great way to cool off after a great day of horseback riding and exploring ancient indian ruins.

Fantastic Bird Watching Opportunities

The ponds are secluded along the Hassayampa River, and are a true bird watcher’s paradise. This riparian environment is home to over 150 species of birds, including the American Bald Eagle, Great Blue Heron, and a variety of hawks, owls, ducks and quail.

Tent and RV Park Camping

Our beautiful and secluded campgrounds are located next to the lake and can accommodate groups of up to 100 people. They are perfect for outdoor adventure groups such as boyscouts, girl scouts or church groups. The campgrounds have electricity, picnic tables, shaded ramadas, BBQ grills, clean restrooms and showers with hot water.

At night, everyone gathers at the giant community firepit to sit on benches and enjoy a relaxing evening of story telling and guitar singalongs under a sky of billions of stars that you cannot see in Phoenix.

Tent and RV camping is $15 per person, per night. We have plenty of room for RVs, but we do not have hookups.

The campground facilities include clean restrooms with
flushing toilets, hot showers and electricity for blow dryers.
